Encouraging songs and scriptures

Postby asc » Mon May 10, 2010 9:20 am

Is there any chance of making this sticky so we can all post on it?

The first line of this hymn came to mind last night - I haven't heard it for over 40 years. I see that it was written by William Cowper, who suffered from very severe depression:

Sometimes a light surprises the Christian while he sings;
It is the Lord, who rises with healing in His wings:
When comforts are declining, He grants the soul again
A season of clear shining, to cheer it after rain.

In holy contemplation we sweetly then pursue
The theme of God’s salvation, and find it ever new.
Set free from present sorrow, we cheerfully can say,
Let the unknown tomorrow bring with it what it may.

It can bring with it nothing but He will bear us through;
Who gives the lilies clothing will clothe His people, too;
Beneath the spreading heavens, no creature but is fed;
And He Who feeds the ravens will give His children bread.

Though vine nor fig tree neither their wonted fruit should bear,
Though all the field should wither, nor flocks nor herds be there;
Yet God the same abiding, His praise shall tune my voice,
For while in Him confiding, I cannot but rejoice.

Thanks for this Ann
I've never come across this hymn before, and love the words - especially the first verse, which ties in with something from church for me last night

PS - I hope this is now sticky! I had to hunt around a bit to find how to do it!

I've posted this several times on individual threads, but really would love to put it on a sticky thread. This is one of the most special songs to me for the low times - it's a Salvation Army Songster piece.

When my heart was so broken that I could not pray;
When love wasn’t easy to see,
Someone was there, somebody cared,
Somebody prayed for me.

Somebody went to the throne of heaven;
Somebody lifted my name,
Bringing me into God’s holy presence,
Saying what I could not say.
Somebody showed me the face of God’s mercy
When darkness was all I could see.
Somebody pleaded the blood of Jesus,
Somebody prayed for me.

When the future looked hopeless, and I’d given up;
When I had lost sight of my dreams,
Someone drew near, dried every tear.
Somebody prayed for me.

I love some of the old hymns and because the words are familiar from my childhood, i can sing them as I set out in the morning.
Great is Thy Faithfulness helps me when I'm thinking that I have 'failed' again, remembering how patient God is with us, ready to forgive us when we fall.

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my father,
There is no shadow of turning with thee:
Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not,
As thou hast been, thou for ever wilt be.

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth;
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for to-day and bright hope for to-morrow:
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my father,
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed thy hand hath provided,
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.

I put these together for a meeting tomorrow - based on my 'kit.'

CHRISTIAN THOUGHTS
Unseen warriors fight for us
We are safe deep in God’s love
The crucifixion was followed by resurrection
Christ endured the cross etc. for the joy of buying His children
Christ’s resurrection smashed the powers of darkness
His banner over us is love
The Creator of all the beauty around is the One Who holds our hand
Christ is with us, although the future may be scary
Easter – rock solid hope in an uncertain world
We receive Christ and we offer Him as a gift to the world
My life must be Christ’s broken bread
We shine as lights as we are lit by Christ
We praise the Creator of the rainbow
God can meet our need – great or small
Jesus’ power is always able to help us
He knows, He loves, He cares, nothing the truth can dim. He always
gives the best to those who leave the choice to Him.

I shall not fear though darkened clouds may gather round me;
The God I serve is one who cares and understands.
Although the storms I face would threaten to confound me,
Of this I am assured, I'm in His hands.
I'm in His hands, I'm in His hands;
Whate'er the future holds, I'm in His hands.
The days I cannot see have all been planed for me;
His way is best, you see. I'm in His hands.

What though I cannot know the way that lies before me,
I still can trust and freely follow His commands.
My faith is firm since He it is who watches o'er me;
Of this I'm confident - I'm in His hands.

In days gone by my Lord has always proved sufficient
When I have yielded to the law of love's demands;
Why should I doubt that He will evermore be present
To make His will my own. I'm in His hands.

Stanley E Ditmer (SA Songbook 732)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This reminds me of one you might know:
I know Who holds the future, and He'll guide me with His hand.
With God things don't just happen - everything by Him is planned.
So as I face tomorrow with it's problems large and small
I'll trust the God of miracles, give to Him my all.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another lovely chorus from our songbook:

Beauty for ashes my Lord doth prepare;
Garments of praise for my days of despair;
Gladness for sadness and laughter for tears;
Oil for my woundings and love for my fears.

There has been a thread on Premier and I thought I'd post most of it here:
... I grew up on "Before the throne of God above" - but the tune was very hard - then Vicki Cook's tune came along and a 'new; hymn entered the Christian community. Amusingly, though, "My Jesus I love Thee, I know Thou art mine" and "All to Jesus I surrender" appeared ,unchanged, as 'new!' A little jazzing up of "Be Thou my Vision" is good.

My favourite update though is a song I used to sing at chapel, but to a boring, dire tune:

He giveth more grace as our burdens grow greater.
He sendeth more strength as our labours increase.
To added affliction He addeth His mercy,
To multiplied trials He multiplies peace.

When we have exhausted our store of endurance
And our strength has failed ere the day is half done;
When we reach the end of our hoarded resources
Our Father's full giving has only begun.

His love has no limit, His grace has no measure,
His power no boundary known unto men.
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus
Our Father's full giving has only begun.

This was then linked to 'The Ash Grove' - BUT it meant using verse 3 as a chorus, or fiddling with the tune - a bit annoying! Then Ray Steadman-Allan, one of the Salvation Army music writers produced "Blacklands" - great - not a particularly modern style, but one which is easily singable and sounds good.

I love this song and use it when I get really upset. It is my relaxtion song.

Kate Middleton puts in one of her books about putting on a song and either singing or humming it to help relax as it helps the breathing. You have to pratices it lots for it to work but it is worth it.

How Great is Our God

The splendour of the King,
Clothed in majesty;
Let all the earth rejoice,
All the earth rejoice.
He wraps Himself in light
And darkness tries to hide,
And trembles at His voice,
And trembles at His voice.

CHORUS
How great is our God,
Sing with me, how great is our God,
And all will see how great,
How great is our God.

And age to age He stands, and time is in His hands;
Beginning and the end, beginning and the end.
The Godhead, Three in One, Father, Spirit, Son,
The Lion and the Lamb, the Lion and the Lamb.

Name above all names,
Worthy of all praise;
My heart will sing:
How great is our God.

Remember God loves you :) I know he loves me as well and has a plan for me :) just wish he would hurry up with it as I can't take much more of this pain :(

Take the shackles off my feet so I can dance
I just wanna praise you
I just wanna praise you
You broke the chains now I can lift my hands
And I'm gonna praise you
I'm gonna praise you

In the corners of mind
I just can't seem to find a reason to believe
That I can break free
Cause you see I have been down for so long
Feel like the hope is gone
But as I lift my hands, I understand
That I should praise you through my circumstance

Take the shackles off my feet so I can dance
I just wanna praise you
I just wanna praise you
You broke the chains now I can lift my hands
And I'm gonna praise you
I'm gonna praise you

Everything that could go wrong
All went wrong at one time
So much pressure fell on me
I thought I was gon lose my mind
But I know you wanna see
If I will hold on through these trials
But I need you to lift this load
Cause I can't take it anymore

Take the shackles off my feet so I can dance
I just wanna praise you
I just wanna praise you
You broke the chains now I can lift my hands
And I'm gonna praise you
I'm gonna praise you

Been through the fire and the rain
Bound in every kind of way
But God has broken every chain
So let me go right now

Take the shackles off my feet so I can dance
I just wanna praise you
I just wanna praise you
You broke the chains now I can lift my hands
And I'm gonna praise you
I'm gonna praise you
[repeat x3]

I love this song. Whenever we sing it in church I sing it as a Prayer to the Lord as it is just how I feel especily the 2nd verse with holding on and asking him to lift the load Please Lord can't take anymore

I found this on another forum.

SCARS OF LIFE

Some years ago, on a hot summer in South Florida ;
a little boy decided to go for a swim in
The old swimming hole behind his house.

In a hurry to dive into the cool water,
He ran out the back door, leaving behind
Shoes, socks, and shirt as he went.

He flew into the water, not realizing that
As he swam toward the middle of the lake,
An alligator was swimming toward him from the shore.

His father, working in the yard,
Saw the two as they got closer and closer together.

In utter fear, he ran toward the water,
Yelling to his son as loudly as he could.

Hearing his voice, the little boy became alarmed
And made a U-turn to swim to his father.
It was too late. Just as he reached his father,
The alligator reached him.

From the dock, the father grabbed his little boy by
The arms just as the alligator snatched his legs.
That began an incredible tug-of-war between the two.

The alligator was much stronger than the father,
But the father was much too passionate to let go.

A farmer happened to drive by, heard his screams,
Raced from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator.

Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital,
The little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred
By the vicious attack of the animal.

And on his arms, were deep scratches where his father's
Fingernails dug into his flesh in his effort to hang on to the son he loved.

The newspaper reporter who interviewed the
Boy after the trauma, asked if he would show him his scars.

The boy lifted his pant legs. And then, with obvious pride,
He said to the reporter, 'But look at my arms.
I have great scars on my arms, too.
I have them because my Dad wouldn't let go.'

You and I can identify with that little boy.
We have scars, too. No, not from an alligator,
But the scars of a painful past.

Some of those scars are unsightly and have caused
Us deep regret. But, some wounds, my friend,
Are because God has refused to let go.
In the midst of your struggle,
God's been there holding on to you.

The Scripture teaches that God loves you.
You are a child of God.
God wants to protect you and provide
For you in every way.
But sometimes we foolishly wade into dangerous situations,
Not knowing what lies ahead..

The swimming hole of life is filled with peril
- and we forget that the enemy is waiting to attack.
That's when the tug-of-war begins
- and if you have the scars of God's love on your arms,
Be very, very grateful. God did not and will not ever let you go.

Never judge another person's scars,
Because you don't know what they are going through
Or how they got those scars.

Dear God

Please untie the knots
that are in my mind
Remove the have nots
the can nots and the do nots
that I have in my mind.

Erase the will nots,
may nots
might nots that may find
a home in my heart.

Release me from the could nots,
would nots and
should nots that obstruct my life.

And most of all,
Dear God,
I ask that you remove from my mind,
my heart and my life all of the 'am nots'
that I have allowed to hold me back,
especially the thought
that I am not good enough.

Amen

Re: Encouraging songs and scriptures

Postby asc » Mon Aug 02, 2010 10:10 pm

I received this today, and thought it was really special - a bit like "Footprints."

"The Quilt Holes"

As I faced my Maker at the last judgment, I knelt before the Lord along with all the other souls.

Before each of us laid our lives like the squares of a quilt in many piles; an angel sat before each of us sewing our quilt squares together into a tapestry that is our life.

But as my angel took each piece of cloth off the pile, I noticed how ragged and empty each of my squares was. They were filled with giant holes. Each square was labeled with a part of my life that had been difficult, the challenges and temptations I was faced with in every day life. I saw hardships that I endured, which were the largest holes of all.

I glanced around me. Nobody else had such squares. Other than a tiny hole here and there, the other tapestries were filled with rich color and the bright hues of worldly fortune. I gazed upon my own life and was disheartened.

My angel was sewing the ragged pieces of cloth together, threadbare and empty, like binding air.

Finally the time came when each life was to be displayed, held up to the light, the scrutiny of truth. The others rose; each in turn, holding up their tapestries. So filled their lives had been. My angel looked upon me and nodded for me to rise.

My gaze dropped to the ground in shame. I hadn't had all the earthly fortunes. I had love in my life and laughter. But there had also been trials of illness and wealth, and false accusations that took from me my world, as I knew it. I had to start over many times. I often struggled with the temptation to quit, only to somehow muster the strength to pick up and begin again. I spent many nights on my knees in prayer, asking for help and guidance in my life. I had often been held up to ridicule, which I endured painfully, each time offering it up to the Father in hopes that I would not melt within my skin beneath the judgmental gaze of those who unfairly judged me.

And now, I had to face the truth.. My life was what it was, and I had to accept it for what it was.

I rose and slowly lifted the combined squares of my life to the light.

An awe-filled gasp filled the air. I gazed around at the others who stared at me with wide eyes.

Then, I looked upon the tapestry before me. Light flooded the many holes, creating an image, the face of Christ. Then our Lord stood before me, with warmth and love in His eyes. He said, 'Every time you gave over your life to Me, it became My life, My hardships, and My struggles.

Each point of light in your life is when you stepped aside and let Me shine through, until there was more of Me than there was of you.'

May all our quilts be threadbare and worn, allowing Christ to shine through!

God determines who walks into your life...it's up to you to decide who you let walk away, who you let stay and who you refuse to let go.'

I need this back. If you'll do this for me, I'll do it for you. When there is nothing left but God, that is when you find out that God is all you need.

Take 60 seconds and give this a shot! All you do is simply say the following small prayer for the person who sent you this.

Father, bless all my family and friends in whatever it is that you know they may need this day! And may their life be full of your peace, prosperity and power as he/she seeks to have a closer relationship with you. Amen.

Send this on to five other people, including the one who sent it to you.. Within hours you caused a multitude of people to pray for other people. Then sit back and watch the power of God work in your life.

We had a couple of hymns today which really spoke to me as messages to those of us with mood disorders etc. and I thought I would share them with you. You may know the Grahm Kendrick one. It counld almost describe bipolar disorder.

SA Song Book 717 – Tunes Wiltshire (4-line) or Ellacombe

Dear Lord, I lift my heart to Thee,
My helplessness I own;
The way before I cannot see,
I dare not walk alone..
More clearly would I realise
Thy presence and Thy power,
Not only under summer skies,
But in the darkest hour.

Not only when I sense Thee near
Art Thou most surely nigh,
Nor hast Thou, Lord, a quicker ear
Because my faith is high..
My changing moods do not control
Thy covenanted aid;
Thou hast the guarding of my soul,
And I am not afraid.

So often in the pleasant place
Our faith depends on sight;
The temper of my trust must face
Its trial in the night..
Then quietness and confidence
And waiting on the Lord
Shall be my strength, my sure defence,
And peace be my reward.

John Izzard

For the joys and for the sorrows
The best and worst of times
For this moment, for tomorrow
For all that lies behind
Fears that crowd around me
For the failure of my plans
For the dreams of all I hope to be
The truth of what I am

For this I have Jesus
For this I have Jesus
For this I have Jesus, I have Jesus
(Repeat)

For the tears that flow in secret
In the broken times
For the moments of elation
Or the troubled mind
For all the disappointments
Or the sting of old regrets
All my prayers and longings
That seem unanswered yet

For the weakness of my body
The burdens of each day
For the nights of doubt and worry
When sleep has fled away
Needing reassurance
And the will to start again
A steely-eyed endurance
The strength to fight and win

This is the whole of the song that Eppie quoted - based on my favourite verse:

Title: His Strength Is Perfect

I can do all things
Through Christ who gives me strength
But sometimes I wonder what He can do through me
No great success to show
No glory on my own
Yet in my weakness He is there to let me know

CHORUS

His strength is perfect when our strength is gone
He'll carry us when we can't carry on
Raised in his power the weak become strong
His strength is perfect
His strength is perfect

We can only know
The power that He holds
When we truly see how deep our weakness goes
His strength is us begins
When our comes to an end
He hears our humble cry
And proves again

CHORUS

This was on today's prayer post;

LORD, EVEN THE SAINTS KNOW IT…
This strange phenomenon
of the ‘dark night of the soul’.
Why should those who walk most closely with you
be afflicted in this way?
The divine light, which has shone around them
seems to be extinguished.
The warmth of your love cannot be felt
Former faith in your power looks
Ridiculous
The spiritual world becomes cold, empty,
meaningless.

Many have known it and have yet won through.
It is not a permanent state, Lord,
but why does it occur at all?
You knew it on the cross, O Christ,
in a fearful sense of abandonment by God.
We know it in lesser measure
yet it blankets the soul with chill desolation.

Help us, Master, when we go through these periods
of spiritual black-out.
Let us cling to the foundation of our faith,
the corner stone of your love and mercy.
One day the clouds will break
and we shall emerge from the dark night
to find the sun of righteousness still shining.
